Transformations in existing neighbourhoods or the design of new urban areas are always occurring in the highly complex environment of the city system. The opportunity of rule-based designing consists of both refining the design capability within the complexity of urban systems as well as optimizing action and intervention. Computer-aided parametric design tools have great potential for urban design because working with structural principles, relationships and dependencies are inherent to this method.
This is the parametric design based on the urban construction to be understood as a process in which a digital system of relationships, as it were designed as a structuring constellation whose properties are determined by factors and remain to be defined by these and other possible values permanently modifiable. The concept is based on a dynamic set of rules that influences all other elements as a reference system. The complexity can increase by setting other systems e.g. as subsystems in relationship to each other.
The “Porta BCN” study is of an area forming a western entrance to the city, a gateway to Barcelona, at the beginning of two determining streets, the urban structure to be redefined. This area (about 58 ha) is located west of the old city of Barcelona, between Avinguda Diagonal and the Carretera de Collblanc / Carrer de Laureà Miro and is bounded on the west by the Ronda de Dalt.
The premise of the design concept is to answer to the exposed position in the urban fabric so it may arise in a kind of experiment to an individual district with a specific address. The program will provide services with regard to quality living and working space in Barcelona and must be as flexible as possible for the blanks and the dimensioning of building sites and subdivision, the relationship between buildings, open space and the distribution of activities. In addition, there is the possibility to check on the unpredictable, how to respond to changes in the program, other densities or modified blanks from urban sites, including other types of buildings, without loss of structured framework, design quality and feasibility.
For the study, specific architectural types have been developed as components of influence defining behaviour, including with respect to their position in the area, density, shading, proportion and dimension.
This is a sensitive system, which responds in its interaction with environmental factors (climate, light, wind, aerodynamics, density, etc.). Energetic and programmatic relationships are included as determinants in the design. The increase in the qualitative complexity of the urban structure itself is also subject to the draft, their dynamic modification and differentiation of individual components / volumes that are within the relationship system in interaction with each other.

THE SUSTAINABLE CITY OF THE FUTURE
Open International Ideas Competition
Urban form / Copenhagen meets Øresund / A city at the water
The overall urban development derives from the structured and formed (formal) Nordhavenen port development principles. The port development and artificial land reclamation of former generations shows its form determinant functionality via polygonal cut areas. The development of Nordhavenen derives from it. The water is the design and border determinant element from the open strait to the small channel. The hierarchic structured channel system creates eight different town quarters that are integrated into the layout and design of Copenhagen’s port development genealogy.
Strategy and development
A town structure is proposed so that it can cope with future development and unpredictability. The strategy for the whole concept has been created in such a way that a spacious and functioning quarter is accomplished in each stage of town development that provides structure for the next coming development stage. A spacious frame is formed by adjusted channel and water systems in conjunction with a superior structure of space which subdivides the future land in different dimensional town areas. A concise layout (framework) for versatile and future development will emerge. Convertibility and adaptability are very sustainable parameters for the development of a city. This is why it has been proposed to subdivide some building areas into small plots forming the basic model of a European city. This enables the construction of different and private apartments which creates a lively surrounding, a city for everyone.

Identity
The concept for a (the) new “Magok Waterfront” takes over the target of the Han River Renaissance project and integrates this into a total concept. “Magok Waterfront” is directly connected to Han River. Water and landscape are the deciding topics, which stand in a dialog with contemporary architecture (building structures).
“Magok Waterfront” has a specific identity that is connected to a high degree of urbanity, the reference to Han River, as well as to landscapes full of quality. This strengthens the character of Seoul as an attractive, livable, lasting global city.
The central element is Magok Marina with the Lake Park. Together these design a concise space form, which Magok Development Area connects to the Han River. The broadminded opening of the space makes a direct reference to the river and Waterfront has an effect far into the Magok Development Area.
Concept/Urban Design
The whole area is separated into different areas with characters and atmospheres, functions and activities, tightness and constructions, which are matched. Differentiated tree structures which comprise the area at the sides create a form for the system of clear space.
Between Marina and Reservoir, an architectonic structure with several levels has been designed, which on the one hand separates these from each other (different water level), on the other hand displays the reference to the common topic of Waterfront (zone A + B).
The Olympic Expressway leads through a clearly shown gate at its north which refers to “Magok Waterfront”.
Activities / Functions
The Marina area with its attached Boat + Yachting Centre and Retail Area as well as the western promenade with its many activities are designed very urban. Here are all the facilities which are necessary for an urban life in “Magok Waterfront” (yacht club, nautical shops, tourist facilities, entertainment, supermarket, shops, offices, hotels, etc.).
Watermanagement
The water levels of Marina, Magok Reservoir and in the area of Lake Park must be controlled and adjusted independently. Marina is connected to Han River by a double layered floodgate including lock and has a permanent medium water level of 0.00 – 0.00 m. The lock is built for the normal ship types and ship sizes. The reservoir can be flushed by Marina, if it gets too dry. The reservoir itself with its connected sewage lines will be controlled by Magok Pump Station, which is independent from the other water systems, to guarantee a safe dewatering. The open channels in the South of Magok Development Area and Lake Park are connected to Marina as well as to the Reservoir. Water levels, which are too high, will be lead into the reservoir and pumped by the pump station into Han River. Low Water levels will be balanced by Marina, controlled by the lock to Han River.

Identity
A city that challenges the future and having the base on its own historical culture
The work of several generations of energetic people has created today’s Carlsberg Group. This cultural and economical achievement is displayed by high quality of the architecture, the gardens and free spaces on the Carlsberg’s brewery ground in Copenhagen. The present concept aims to unveil the site’s (Carlsberg Site) special characteristic, the atmosphere and to overlay it with a new urban structure – side om side. The new, urban structure offers complex spaces, which are open for a multilayered living together, cultural changes and social further developments.
City life
Forth stands the quality of life
Diverse people, townsfolk (townsman, townspeople, urbanites, city dweller) are living, working and residing (live, dwell, room), constituting the community – Carlsberg by – side om side.
Urban form
The area’s arrangement of differentiated scopes with specific characteristics is displayed in the implementation (moulding) of the urbanite figure. The central scope (Ny Carlsberg Vej) forms a distinct figuration with a high density and higher buildings as in the northern and southern parts.
Multilayered City
This structure ensures the integration of the asset, the listed buildings, to integrate them into the master-concept with the new constructions (side om side), allows the ensemble’s autonomy. Varying architecture, individual buildings are bound together to an ensemble.
